Let's Vote!! It's election time and a perfect opportunity to guide students to become responsible citizens in future years. As voter turn-out becomes less common, not all children experience grown-up conversations about government and voting. I think if we start early in school, talking about why American citizens should vote, students will form a commitment to this privilege.
Luckily, many children's authors have written appropriate-age books about voting, elections, and the Presidency. With these books, my third grade students will all be able to read a book and report to the class about what they learned. Then the books will be exchanged among other classmates.
Along with these books, my students will use 2 US maps to track the campaign stops of the Presidential candidates. Life-sized posters of the Presidential candidates will be in our hall so other students will be aware of our project. We will write letters to the candidates telling them about our learning. We will invite local candidates to visit our school. We want to take a trip to a voting poll so we can see voting booths and maybe even practice voting. These books will give students the knowledge needed to write and to ask questions smartly.
Is there any doubt that on Election Night, my third graders will be participants in their American government? Your donation to this project will make this happen, and we can all be proud of our American privilege!
