I teach General Classroom Music at Rand Road Elementary in Garner, North Carolina. It is a K-5 School of Distinction within the Wake County Public School System, with an enrollment of over 600 students. Our music classroom needs musical staff lined marker boards. I presently have to use a small piece of white board that is not dry erase material. I have to put up another small piece when that piece is full, or use a wet paper towel to wipe it off and then dry it, which is time consuming and messy. White boards with permanent staves would give the children something to write on and allow me to demonstrate musical concepts. We work on intervals using Solfege, and the staves, which are the lines and spaces as they appear on a musical page, are needed to demonstrate these concepts. When a student understands how to distinguish the distance between two notes and how the notes sound, they can transfer that knowledge to reading a piece of music. Solfege is the method of hand signs which demonstrate the distance between the notes as seen on the musical staff. This knowledge will allow my students to be better music readers when they join a vocal group or begin to play an instrument.
