Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an incredibly diverse population. They come from many different cultures and backgrounds. I have many students that have a primary language other than English.
Many of my students are on free or reduced-price lunch; this allows them to have free or reduced cost breakfast as well, but they are not able to actually get to school early enough every day to utilize this opportunity.
They work incredibly hard and are very attentive. Most of my students are preparing for college, some directly for career, and a few into the military.
We are trying to create a community of tolerance, acceptance, and compassion within our school and our teams/clubs. The school is so incredibly diverse (Religion, Ethnicity, Socio-economic, Single Parent Homes, Grandparent Homes, etc), with many immigrants.
We have many of these immigrant families as part of our robotics and STEM programs and we try to create a new family for them within our town. We work diligently with these young people, many of whom are English Language Learners [ELL] and have left all of their friends at home to come here to the U.S. to start a new life. I am a mentor for our robotics team.
My Project
Robotics is an incredibly interesting subject for students of all ages. It incorporates Mathematics, Engineering, Art, Science, Technology, and Language Arts. We are hosting a group of robotics nights at our local elementary schools. We have been training the teachers on Scratch programming and we are going to be doing Hour of Code with the students.
Each elementary school is doing a different Hour of Code activity; we need to document the events for our local newspaper and for our district website.
In order to do this, we need some additional SD cards for our video camera and digital cameras. We don't want to change the SD cards throughout the night, so each of them is 128 Gb.
The parents are going to be working side by side with their children and we will be encouraging them to continue to work on the coding at home. We want the parents to be more involved in the technology and this will help the parents and students have something to discuss at home and do together. The students will be learning valuable coding skills and maybe the parents as well. We hope to inspire a generation of scientists and engineers.
