This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Meet my students: They are 4 and 5 year olds. I am in a Pre-K classroom. Our school demographics are predominately African-American. The 2nd most popular ethnic background is Hispanic. The crime rate in our area is higher than the surrounding parts. We have a high poverty rate and low-income rate where our most of our students are receiving free and reduced meals. Yet, we strive for excellence, education and experiences, which are the keys to opportunity.
My Project
Stories in general help teach students about themselves, others and allow them to use their imagination to take them to places they may never go to. These storytelling kits and puppets will allow my students to interact with stories while building very important language skills. Interacting with stories will help them increase vocabulary and comprehension. After hearing stories, students will be able to use the puppets and pieces to retell the stories by themselves and with a partner. It will also provide meaningful play during work time. Storytelling kits and puppets will be entertaining and allow students to visualize and bring stories to life when I use them to tell stories or when they are interacting with the stories.
