I have been teaching students for nineteen years. My students have multiple disabilities that impact them in a variety of ways. Some of my students have trouble walking, eating, speaking, hearing, and seeing. All of them can and will learn many things.
We live in such a wonderful time when technology can make a huge impact towards independence for my students.
The freedom of being able to "do" and not have things "done" for them can help them in ways that cannot be measured.
My students work hard every day. They have so many awesome things that they can do and things that they know. They understand many of the stories that they read, but they struggle to retell these stories to demonstrate how much they really do know.
Materials, like these visuals are wonderful tools to help my students demonstrate their understanding of stories that are classroom favorites.
My students love stories, they have favorite authors and favorite parts of books, just like their peers without disabilities. Imagine the joy of finally being able to reenact, retell and revisit a favorite part of a book with friends! Imagine being able to pretend to be The Rainbow Fish and give away scales to the other fish!
