This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The kids at my school know very little about American history. I'd like them to check out DVDs about American history from our school library. I'm thinking of some absorbing history DVDs made especially for kids: DVDs that will give them some knowledge of - (and pride in) - their country's story.

The school library is at a K-8 Center in South Florida.

There are over 800 children at our school. Their ages range from four to fourteen. Most of our students are first-generation Americans. Mom and dad tend to come from Central and South America, the Caribbean, even Europe. We live in a very cosmopolitan city - but it's still a city in the U.S.A. Yet many of our children can't tell you when Columbus discovered America, who is pictured on a dollar bill, or who Neil Armstrong was. OK., so we have a challenge. What can I do, as a librarian, to help solve this problem? My idea is to offer our student patrons these great DVDs. They tell some really interesting stories from American history in lively, kid-friendly formats. When our students check these out from the library and watch them at home, they'll learn a lot about American history without even realizing they're studying it.

My Project

The backbone of this video collection is Liberty's Kids. My son used to watch this series on PBS when it was first broadcast about ten years ago. It's wonderful. Here's the marketer's description of the series: "This 6-disc set includes 40 episodes of the award-winning animated series about the people, places and events behind the birth of the American nation. Featuring celebrity voices, including Walter Cronkite as Ben Franklin, the series follows a pair of apprentice reporters from Ben Franklin's print shop as they witness the events of the American Revolution. The programs teach children about the founding principles of democracy... The all-star voice cast includes Annette Benning, Michael Douglas, Dustin Hoffman, Liam Neeson, Warren Buffett, General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, and more." The rest of this video collection = programs from the PBS 'Reading Rainbow' series. These tell stories from American history and include field trips to historical sites and reviews of related books.

I really think that these DVDs are a great way to teach our kids about American history.

They definitely need to know more about their adopted country, and Liberty's Kids and Reading Rainbow will help our students learn in a fun, interesting way. Please help us to offer our kids this exciting opportunity to learn more about the U.S.A. Thanks.
