My Project

This project will provide the opportunity to enhance the dramatic play area in each of our three Kindergarten classrooms. In these areas, students will explore the theme of weather and seasons through the use of manipulatives, dress up for role play, and visual aids to foster vocabulary and language development that are key components to building background knowledge and future comprehension. With our school being very rural and economically disadvantaged, this project will expose students to real world topics that they may not have the chance to experience on their own.

Young learners begin to establish the basic foundations of reading comprehension through active learning and the building of background knowledge.

Students listen to stories on weather, explore interesting words, and share their experiences, all to help build background knowledge that will enable them to make sense of text that they will read at an older age. Unfortunately, in the age of technology, young children spend very little time building oral language skills and strengthening fine motor skills through play. We want to give them the opportunity to use their imagination and think creatively and independently to build this knowledge while role playing real world situations.
