This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This school year is starting out with a bang! I moved to 5th grade after teaching second grade for nearly 18 years. It is such a gift to get to work with many students I had in grade two a second time. I feel I have been given a "second chance" to be a part of some of their lives again. Everything is exciting and terrifying all at the same time. Have you ever felt this way?
I work in GGU which is an urban school district in Orange County, California.
Many of my students live in multigenerational homes or apartments and my school site is 100% free and reduced lunch. My classroom consists of 27 medium-sized humans who are thrilled to be back at school for full-day instruction.
Through the pandemic, our school site provided devices and hot spots to a majority of families seeking tools to continue schooling. Over these past 18 months, I have personally grown in my technology use and the families in our community have grown too. This proves to be another exciting school year and I know the best is yet to come!
My Project
What is financial literacy? How do I best instruct students about financial literacy in a community full of poverty? These are two dynamic questions I am thinking about as I write this project.
We make decisions every day, our decision-making skills are used to improve my quality of life each day.
My life is enhanced as I make wiser choices. Financial literacy is a result of me having a firm understanding of time and money; as well as utilizing other
resources for efficiency.
This is a necessary task and a complicated task as I work side by side with my fifth graders. Please help me fund this project for necessary tools to begin conversations around financial literacy as well as have math books in my library for students to access throughout the year.
