My Students
My kindergarteners are curious, active, and eager to learn and share. For a majority of my students, kindergarten is their very first experience in a school setting. Organizations like DonorsChoose.org are a unique way for us to seek the funding we need to make the most of this experience! My goal is to create a safe and positive environment for them that fosters a love of learning. Being their first experience in a school setting, I feel that the positive impact I make will encourage them to become life-long learners.
My students come from unique households and have a variety of abilities, interests, and learning styles.
They are scientists, explorers, authors, assistants, editors, tech managers, and mathematicians. I love learning from their background experiences!
My Project
Studies show that college students say they are academically prepared for college, but not emotionally prepared. The vast majority of these college students say they wished their parents or school teachers had invested more time in teaching them how to deal with uncomfortable feelings, like disappointment, anxiety, and loneliness. Most adults rarely have in-depth conversations about feelings with kids. Consequently, kids aren't learning to identify their feelings and aren't gaining the coping skills they need to deal with those feelings.
My students need discussion opportunities to express their feelings so that they can learn to cope with difficult emotions.
As a kindergarten teacher, I have the opportunity to make a positive impact on this topic early on in students’ life. I want to change the stigma students have about expressing and coping with their emotions by incorporating feeling words into our weekly class discussions. I noticed that my Kindergarteners are more comfortable acknowledging their feelings when others share how they feel.
I'm hoping to use picture books as foundations for class discussions and art projects that will encourage my students to express feelings freely and without anxiety. I want each student to have their own set of art supplies to avoid spreading germs while at school. Each student will receive a pencil box with art supplies. Dabbers will be used with the Dot books to create art projects. I feel that by having nonjudgmental class conversations and expressive art projects we can build each other up and learn how to manage our emotions in a healthy way.
