My students need clipboards to move around the classroom and observe the world outside, and a heavy-duty pencil sharpener to keep up with all the writing they will do.

My Students
Help my children explore the world around them through field-site visits and walking tours. Clipboards will give them the chance to easily write about and draw sketches of what they are observing.
I teach a first grade gifted and talented class at a high poverty school in New York City.
As I have not yet met the new children I will have in September, based on the class that I had last year, I expect to have about 24 children, all with extremely diverse needs. I also expect that there will be amazing thinkers with a love for learning and with lots of ideas to share all the time.
My Project
As I'm about to begin my second year as a teacher of a gifted class, I have been spending my summer attending workshops and learning as much I can about the best ways to teach gifted children. I am so excited to guide this upcoming class in inquiry studies and project-based learning, all related to the students' own interests.
Having clipboards readily available in the classroom will allow children to move to different places in the room to work on their projects, whether it is to lay down on the rug or sit at the science center. As they collect research and observations related to their projects, they will easily be able to move to different parts of the room and keep their work organized.
I also hope to take these children on many adventures outside of the classroom. As simply as taking a walk through our neighborhood, we will be able to study our social studies curriculum. The children will be able to take their clipboards with them and write about these first-hand experiences.
Having a class set of clipboards will really open the door up for my children.
It will allow them to explore and investigate the world around them. With sharpened pencils, thanks to a reliable pencil sharpener, the children will be writing and sketching everywhere!
