My Project
We are a specialized program located on the island of Maui. Our program includes students classified with emotional disturbance typically from low-income/high poverty backgrounds.
Our students present with significant behavioral challenges that impact their academic and social-emotional development.
The obstacles these challenges present place our students at a disadvantage in comparison to their typically developing peers. In order to overcome these obstacles our students need to be motivated to adaptively resolve academic and social stressors. The positive behavior support program Kupa'a was created to provide motivation to students in making choices that would have a positive impact on their progress both educationally and socially.
Traditionally, the Kupa'a program has depended on modern technology to keep the program exciting, motivating, and a potent reinforcer for positive behavior change. Without this technology our program becomes less effective as students lose interest and the motivation to change. If students do not make the behavioral changes needed to succeed in school they will not develop the skills necessary to be successful adults. After surveying the students to determine highly preferred reward activities, the students overwhelmingly selected the Nintendo Switch as an incentive in meeting their daily/weekly behavioral goals. Please help our students and provide them with the motivation they need today in order to succeed tomorrow.
