Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students walk into our classroom every day excited for the new challenges that await them that day. Each day they are reminded that they were selected to be in my class because I asked for the best students in the school and that's exactly what I got. I let them know that they can do anything if they believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.

I teach at a Title I school in Las Vegas where more than half of our students are on free or reduced lunch.

Many of their families struggle just to make ends meet. You would never know it from the passion and enthusiasm they show each morning when they come to our classroom. They want to be here because they know that if they give their best, they can achieve anything in life.

My Project

There are many things that a child needs when they come to school. One of those things, perhaps the simplest thing, is a pencil. I work in a community where even the small cost of a pencil can be an issue for the families of my students. I don't want my students to ever have to worry about having access the most simplest, yet most essential, of school supplies.

Aside from reading and writing, school needs to be fun for kids.

There's nothing worse for a child than to come to a place for seven hours a day where they are going to be bored. I want to make sure that learning is fun for my students. I do this by providing games like Farkle and Mancala to help my students practice their math and reasoning skills. These games also help my students learn how to play cooperatively; a skill many children are lacking.

One of the most boring parts of school is when children have to memorize math facts. I hated that as a child and I don't want my students to have to suffer from that boredom. I remedy that by giving my students access to electronic flash cards to help them practice their facts. It's a lot more fun, but just as effective, as traditional flash cards. It's really quite a trip to watch kids arguing over who gets to practice their facts first. I love making learning fun.
