As you enter the front doors of my school, you hear music playing, children laughing, and a lot of talking. Everyone is happy and cheerful. They are excited to be at school! I teach at a rural school nestled in the Piedmont region of NC. We serve students who come from all walks of life; however, a large majority of our students come from low income homes. For a lot of the students in my school, school is their happy place.
My school is like family.
All of the students know they matter. They also know they have a lot of cheerleaders and mentors to help them when they need it.
In my classroom, students are 21st century learners. Each day they come to school, they work collaboratively with their peers to solve problems and become global citizens. They are aspiring teachers, artists, sports stars, chefs, veterinarians, law enforcement officers, and the list goes on. My students are an inspiration to me and because of their DREAMS. They push me to be a better teacher each and every day!
My Project
During the 2019-2020, my school will be implementing a renewal plan, which is a district initiative, that will focus on personalizing learning to meet our students' needs.
These materials will help fulfill one of the goals of our renewal plan which is doing away with traditional morning work and allowing students to come in and "play".
While this time will look like play time to students, they will be working on crucial skills that all students need to be successful. These skills include communication, leadership, critical thinking, and artistic expression.
