Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The fantastic and hard-working students at our school come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Over 80% of students are identified as English Language Learners, which means that they enter our classrooms with varying degrees of fluency in the English language.
Some of these students have moved to the USA from Mexico and Central America, and nearly all of my students have parents who immigrated to the USA in search of better lives for their children.
We are designated as a Title 1 school - which means that the majority of our students hail from a low socioeconomic background. While the Title 1 designation allows our students added perks such as free breakfast and lunch, the reality is that my students are still a long way from being on an equal playing field as their peers from other schools.
My Project
Over the past school year, countless students have shared their love for running and being active with me. I would love to take their passion and start a track team for the 2019-2020 school year!
"I always loved running, it was something you could do by yourself, and under your own power - you could go in any direction, fast or slow as you wanted, fighting the wind if you felt like it, seeking out new sights just on the strength of your feet and the courage of your lungs" - Jesse Owens .
The great thing about running is that it is rather inexpensive and requires less equipment than other sports. The equipment outlined below will help me to design age-appropriate running drills and exercises for our students, that will keep them active while having fun. The batons will allow our team to foster camaraderie and teamwork while running relays. The agility cones and ladder will allow our team to partake in fun and kid-friendly drills that will help to improve speed. Finally, the training cones will allow our team to transform our empty field into a race course, complete with a start and finish line.
