Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 6th-8th graders in the South Bronx. They are creative and have started to discover how to express their emotions and trauma through the use of art. Last year they put on their very first art show ever, which gave the students a magnificent sense of accomplishment and pride, but it also increased club participation significantly.

While my students are resourceful and use materials they find to show their creativity, the students and school have minimal resources available for an art club.

Utilizing art in their life has truly been life changing for some of them.

My Project

I started using art with students who had difficulty expressing their emotions calmly and non aggressively. The students utilized art to help calm themselves, gather their thoughts, and express their emotions and trauma.

By incorporating art into their lives, the students started to understand themselves better and were able to increase their ability to engage positively with other students and adults.

I want to ensure that all the students who want to create art have that opportunity. I want as many students to be able to express themselves through drawing, painting, and coloring.

These materials will provide a therapeutic experience for children to work through issues that cannot always be addressed in the classroom while also introducing them to different materials, different styles of art, artists of past and present, and how to utilize art as a way of expression.
