Reading is not always an easy skill to learn, especially for students with reading disabilities who struggle to connect sounds and words in print. "The Science of Reading" is a new focus that my school district is adopting to focus on specific phonics skills. When students struggle with decoding and spelling, it makes them struggle to read and comprehend grade level skills. This discourages them to try reading books like their peers. With this project, the students will have access to different passages to build their reading confidence and become better readers and writers.
Decodable texts and materials are necessary to help solidify foundational phonics skills.
Students need multiple opportunity to access decodable text to apply decoding in real time. Decodable text fosters self confidence, practice in decoding and fluency and helps to build comprehension and vocabulary. Nonfiction books, that talks about science (weather/animals) are topics that my students are very interested in, but don't have access to.
With your support, my students will be able to decode and spell words, gain confidence as they progress and start to read more and more and eventually become strong, fluent and confident readers.
