My Students
Music brings a classroom alive in a way that few activities can. I teach in a 3K-fifth grade, public elementary school with a diverse population of about twelve hundred students. My students are generally from low socioeconomic status immigrant families from all corners of the globe. The ability to participate in a music ensemble, to play an instrument or sing, is a unique opportunity that fosters social emotional expression and learning for many of them.
I have seen music not only enrich their lives, but also give those who may not excel in other areas a chance to shine.
This is why, when we live in a world where music is often the first on the fiscal chopping block and we have all endured a collective trauma with the pandemic, it is so important to keep such opportunities alive for our children.
My Project
With space at a premium during the pandemic, our school expanded outdoor learning spaces by creating gardens that can be used as classrooms. Teaching music has been a challenge this year because singing in the classroom is a risky proposition during the COVID era and is surrounded by strict protocols. So I am seeking ways to bring music making back into the lives of my students.
Imagine having music class with the sun shining and the flowers around you in full bloom, singing joyfully with your teacher and classmates.
That is my vision. I would like to take my students outdoors to sing in the garden, but sitting in the grass without a cushion is uncomfortable and dirty. These cushions will help hundreds of students join in community through the connection of music while enjoying the inspiration of a beautiful garden.
