Let's See DNA Moving and Listen to Your Own Heart Beats!

My students need more hands-on simulations, such as DNA models and stethoscopes, to learn the complicated biological concepts!

FULLY FUNDED! Dr. Tu's classroom raised $179

My Students

"Can I hear my own heart beats?" "How EXACTLY does the random assortment of my parents' DNA makes my sister and I be so different?"

My students are energetic, inquisitive, eager learners who never stop questioning on every topic we go over in our biology classroom.

Being an inner-city public high school, we have very limited funds but we strive to provide our students the highest curriculum standards and as many hands-on activities as our budgets allowed. However, the little activities can never quench their thirst to learn more, especially when the topics are related to human physiology or genetics. I so wish to have more simulated activities to satisfy their fascination on these topics.

My Project

My students will use the DNA simulation kit to model the mitosis and meiosis processes. They will understand the similarities and differences between these two most fundamental reproductive processes and why one leads to more genetic diversity than another. They will also be able to connect the effect of mutation to various genetic diseases. My students will use the stethoscopes to listen to their own heart beats. We can link the sounds to the animation of heart contraction and the ECG charts. I believe the combination of computer and hands-on simulations will strengthen their understanding on these two hard biological concepts.

What makes a learning experience more memorable?

I want my students to get excited by listening to their own heart beats so they want to learn more about the topics. I want them to "see" the chromosomes moving and sorting so it is not a "mystery". I want them to know that science is not reserved for the people in the fancy white coat but for EVERYONE at any age! Perhaps, this experience will inspire them to choose a career in the much needed STEM areas in the future.
