Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are special as they are a diverse group of preschool-aged students who have diverse abilities and needs. My students are PFA students, ELL learners, and students with IEP services (special education services). My classroom has a majority of ELL learners, some of whom only know and speak Spanish. A majority of my students receive free meals because of their socioeconomic status.
Despite any challenges my students may face, I provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences in a positive and safe learning environment.
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
The grocery store/lemonade stand and phones will help my students foster and participate in dramatic play with their peers. They will be able to engage in conversations with their peers by making pretend phone calls and by taking pretend orders. This will expand and further develop their language in the classroom. We also will be able to turn the lemonade stand into other things throughout the year to expand upon our units and themes. For example, we can change the sign to turn it into a bakery or pizza parlor during our food unit, we can turn it into a post office during our community helpers unit, etc. The possibilities are endless for their imaginations with the additions of these pieces in our dramatic play area.
Play is important for healthy brain development.
Engaging in dramatic play allows students to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, emotional, and cognitive strength. Preschool aged children learn to engage and interact in the world around them through play.
Consistency in the classroom can help foster even more independence in the classroom. Having a visual schedule will help my students understand the routine of the day, ease transitions throughout the day, and foster more independence within my students.
