This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
When you put in a hard days work you expect to be paid? When our students work hard to behave, we want them to be rewarded!
Our students attend a Title I, Renaissance school in Hillsborough County, Florida.
97% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Several of our students have Individual Education Plans (IEP) and receive Exceptional Student Education (ESE) services for various disabilities and exceptionalities. Many of our students lack stability at home, and school provides them with some of that much needed stability.
My Project
How students behave at school has a huge impact on what they are able to learn. When our students behave, we want to be able to reward them with incentives, such as stickers, pencils and snacks. The way we accomplish that is with road runner dollars. When our students follow our school wide expectations, they can earn a road runner dollar. Then once a month, the students have the opportunity to cash in their road runner dollars at the Road Runner store. The store gives the students the opportunity to spend the money they earned on fun games and snacks, as well as essentials for school.
Having the school store gives the students something to look forward to once a month.
Rather than just expecting good behavior, we have the opportunity to reward and strengthen good behavior. In addition to being fun for the students, we actually see the benefits in academics and behavior. After only one year with the school store, we saw a reduction in the number of classroom referrals and our school letter grade went from a D to a B.
