My Students
Our classroom of 5th and 6th graders are a true community. We strive to learn through inquiry, integrate all areas of art, work with multi-age peers, and experience academic and social success in a variety of ways. I am lucky enough to teach my students for two years, allowing me to give them the best learning experience possible through looping.
We share ownership of our class and our school!
My students incorporate community-based learning into projects and across the curriculum. Growing up in Hawaii allows for such wonderful opportunities! Because we live on an island students’ experiences are so rich but sometimes limited. DonorsChoose.org is a platform essential to building resources and knowledge for our class.
My Project
Novel-based instruction is so powerful. Instead of worksheets and pre-selected literature, a class set of novels brings a sense of ownership to a student's learning in language arts.
A class novel set allows me to teach comprehension, descriptive language, character development, and a multitude of other standard-based learning skills with one book!
The stories I have chosen are exciting and dynamic, allowing students to get to know two different protagonists, who may feel distant but relatable. When we all have the same novel, students feel connected but it's still easy to differentiate for each learner's needs.
