Because of your support, our classroom now has sturdy individual paper cubbies that will help students stay organized throughout the school year. As middle school students, they are still developing executive functioning skills, and having a designated place for their work will help them build routines, take responsibility for important papers, and set themselves up for greater success. While my students are still enjoying summer break, I can't wait to see their excitement when they return and discover their new cubbies waiting for them.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments actually happened before school ended. About six students volunteered to assemble the cubbies together, working in pairs with very little help from me. They communicated, solved problems, and carefully followed the assembly diagrams to complete the project. There were moments when they accidentally attached the wrong pieces and had to take them apart and try again, but those challenges became valuable learning opportunities. They demonstrated patience, perseverance, and a true growth mindset as they encouraged one another and celebrated each accomplishment. Watching them collaborate so naturally reminded me that some of the best learning happens beyond traditional lessons.\r\n\r\nYour generosity also provided presentation tri-fold boards that will play an important role in one of our most meaningful learning experiences. Each year, students participate in an eight-week mentorship with a local business or community member, exploring careers and developing real-world skills. At the end of the mentorship, they create professional presentations to share what they learned with community members, families, teachers, younger students, and their peers. These new presentation boards will help students proudly showcase their experiences and reflect on how much they have grown. The space exploration poster has also become a favorite reference, inspiring students to research planets, spacecraft, and the history of space missions on their own.\r\n\r\nNext, we will be using these tools to dive deeper into our current science units. Students will continue collecting data, analyzing results, and sharing their findings with the class, using the clipboards and markers to make their thinking visible. Many of them had never seen or used a laser measuring device before, and they were eager to try it out. There was a noticeable sense of pride as they realized they were using the same type of tools that engineers, designers, and builders use in the real world.\r\n\r\nWe have already begun using the laser distance measurers during a design-based science project where students needed to measure spaces and materials accurately in order to plan and build models. Instead of struggling with tape measures or relying on estimates, students were able to collect precise measurements quickly and confidently. This allowed them to focus more on problem-solving, revising their designs, and working independently. I was especially impressed by how students checked their own measurements, discussed accuracy with peers, and made adjustments without needing constant teacher support.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, students will continue using these tools as we move into future investigations involving measurement, data collection, and engineering challenges. The laser measurers are helping students build independence, confidence, and a deeper understanding of why accuracy matters in science and design.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students this opportunity.
