With your donation, my classroom now has three mobile standing whiteboards and a new set of calculators.\r\nTo make thinking visible and increase collaboration, the vertical whiteboards are used during our warm-up time with open-ended questions that promote reasoning and mathematical discussions. Students have enjoyed working while standing with partners and using the boards, and there have been many positive interactions and thoughtful questions as they work through problems. The goal is for students to feel confident trying new strategies and sharing their thinking when they encounter challenging problems.\r\nThe new calculators also support students' independence by allowing them to check their work and evaluate whether their answers are reasonable. During our recent exploration of the Ancient Seven Wonders of the World, students used highlighters to identify key information and deepen their understanding of each wonder. The scissors became especially valuable as students created mini \"wonders\" for their diorama projects, cutting, shaping, and assembling materials to bring their learning to life through hands-on creativity.\r\nEven our outdoor learning has benefited from the generous supplies. My students have been using the paper cutter and laminator to create posters and visual aids for projects ranging from science investigations to mentorship presentations. One powerful moment was watching students prepare for our school's mentorship share-out event—they carefully cut, laminated, and arranged their work, proud to present something that looked polished and meaningful. These tools have helped students take ownership of their learning and given them the confidence to share their ideas with others.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were full of excitement. They were particularly curious about the new world map that centers the Pacific Ocean, a refreshing shift from the traditional, Western-focused maps they've seen before. That map has already become an essential part of our science discussions, helping us explore Earth systems, geography, and Hawai'i's role in the global ocean. Students immediately began making connections and asking deeper questions about where we live and how we're connected to the rest of the world.\r\n\r\nAs we look ahead, students are finishing up their science projects, which they'll be presenting at the end of the month. These materials will continue to be used to support their final presentations and other year-end projects. The materials we received—books across a range of levels and genres, math games, and a classroom microphone—have made a significant and lasting impact on my students' learning experiences.\r\n\r\nThe addition of high-interest books in various genres has sparked a renewed enthusiasm for reading among my students. By providing texts that appeal to different reading levels and interests, every student has been able to find something they genuinely enjoy. From graphic novels to historical fiction and nonfiction, these books have helped even our most reluctant readers discover the joy of getting lost in a good story. I've seen more independent reading happening during our literacy blocks, and students have eagerly recommended books to one another, creating a vibrant and collaborative reading culture in our classroom.\r\n\r\nThe math games have been an invaluable addition to our instructional toolkit. They offer students engaging and hands-on opportunities to practice core skills, especially with all four operations and fractions. These games not only reinforce what we learn during lessons but also promote collaboration, strategic thinking, and confidence in solving problems. Students look forward to math game time and often ask to play during indoor recess, turning what can sometimes feel like challenging concepts into exciting challenges.\r\n\r\nOne of the most transformative additions has been the classroom microphone. It has truly elevated the way students share their writing and projects. Whether presenting to small groups, the whole class, or during school-wide events, students have developed a stronger sense of voice and confidence. The microphone allows every student—especially our quieter or more hesitant speakers—to be heard clearly and proudly. It has been a powerful tool in building communication skills and fostering a supportive and attentive audience among peers.","fullyFundedDate":1742089271270,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-students-through-choices/9167938/","projectTitle":"Empowering Students Through Choices","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Karner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp741595_orig.jpg?crop=783,783,x1555,y552&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1597190393179","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/megankarner"},{"teacherId":8820831,"projectId":9156786,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation of 3D printing filament to our school classes. How did it make such a great impact? The use of these brand new, quality speakers with accessories provided a higher level of quality to the performances at our school. One of the first and most impactful was being able to use this technology for our school wide May Day Celebration. In the beautiful outdoor venue, which was our school field, our May Day celebration was feasible because the new technology allowed us to narrate stories, sing songs, and play music that was essential to the success of May Day. Students, teachers, as well as parents, grandparents, and community people could sit comfortably as an audience and hear clearly and feel the essence of the music and songs. \r\n Performing arts is one of the cornerstones of our Innovations program. Each grade level performs an integrated musical play in collaboration with regular education teachers based on the units of study students are learning about. The performances are breathtaking in their depth of information and all students have the opportunity to perform with their classes in an open pavilion. The new technology we received allows for greater quality of sound as students share their individual parts and group performances.
