I work for a Title I school and teach a self-contained class for students with disabilities. Having a leveled library in my class would allow all my students to have books to read on their independent levels. Book shopping would be exciting and an engaging way to get them to practice reading.
I have students with a variety of learning disabilities.
Their reading levels range from PreK to 2nd grade. Many students in our school come from low-income families and may not be provided with educational materials at home. I try my best to provide the most that I am able to at school.
My Project
Our school does not have a school library, so one day a week I will allow a child to borrow a book from our classroom library. Every day children will be given time to read independently as well. Having leveled bins, students will have assigned bins to choose from that I will determine based on data driven scores.
Having a leveled library in the classroom will provide students with more opportunities to read.
These students will build their confidence in reading with practice. Having a nonfiction library will allow them to learn a multitude of topics that they can make text to world connections. I can't wait to implement these books in my classroom if our goal is met. Thank you all!
