This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In this poverty stricken neighborhood, few things excite and engage my students when it comes to academics, let alone reading. However, when my children are read to, something magical happens! Their eyes grow wide, their voices quiet and it seems they are entranced by the power of the story!
The students in my first grade class live in an extremely poor neighborhood of the NY.
While they are bright, sensitive children, they are faced with many challenges as a result of the home environments from which they come. My class consists of general education, English Language learners, and special needs students. The children in my class have very little academic support at home. In our Title I school, it is difficult for parents to buy food, clothing, and supplies for their children, let alone books.
My Project
Because of the environment in which they live, my students are rarely read to at home and therefore have missed the fun and meaningful experiences that come when reading together. I want my students to see the power of story, to make connections, fall in love with characters and authors, discuss events, and be able to share why they like or dislike a story. I want my students to laugh together when reading Mo Willems books, sing when reading the songbooks, and begin to read independently with the early readers!
For children who have limited experiences, literature is one avenue where they are able to travel around the world, see new and different things, and have meaningful discussions.
By providing books for my students, they will be able to begin reading by themselves, compare favorite characters and authors, and ultimately feel the power of literature.
