Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am the teacher librarian at an urban middle school. This is the first year in many (many!) that students are actually allowed in the library at all. The school is a great, vibrant and very sweet place despite the scary things that happen in the neighborhood and the grim statistics.
The students are eager to read.
Everyday I have a line of students waiting to use the library before school and during lunch. They want to read, check out books, learn more and to talk with others about what they have read. In the early fall we had a lunchtime book talk and it was standing room only. They are eager to read and start book clubs.
My Project
I am requesting the first two books for our inaugural book club. After a meeting with a group of students and a book talk with our local public librarian we decided on these two books. Students will read the books and meet three times for each book to discuss topics related to the books. They will then host a book talk in their English class.
Many of the students at the middle school do not see themselves as readers.
That is something kids at high performing school do. Not all students consider themselves readers and through the library, I hope to change that perception. I want to start book clubs for students, for parents, for teachers, and for mixed groups. I want many students to begin to see themselves as readers and that will begin to happen when they learn about a book they like, can read it and share the experience.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
