Our school, which is bursting at the seams, has a large population of English language learners. About one-third of our students are in the process of building English proficiency; we are home to students from around the world. Some of our students come to us without prior formal schooling. Others have a strong academic background in one (or two!) languages and are focused on building English vocabulary and language.
Students will be able to select books from this shark-related collection during independent reading time; we will also read the class sets together, learning new vocabulary as we explore these remarkable marine creatures.
The Spanish language books will support new arrivals who are literate in Spanish, helping them follow and participate in English language classroom discussions.
Creating and maintaining a rich and varied classroom library is an ongoing process. These shark books will be used as resources to master new vocabulary and to improve speaking, reading, and writing skills.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
