Help me give my students high interest graphic novels and other great print material to reach our goal of 1 million words read by the end of the school year!
Students with special needs are often hesitant to pick up a book to read because of a variety of reasons. Most often kids believe a book will not hold their interest. Books that don't catch and hold a student's interest are not worth the effort that my struggling readers will battle through to complete the book.
Graphic novels and high interest-lower level non-fiction books can be the bridge that helps students with special needs develop a better relationship with books.
It is my goal to help student with reading challenges embrace a growth mindset and the belief that they can and will be able to read books from beginning to end on their own.
My Project
Research shows that proficient readers often read between one and ten million words per year while struggling readers often read ten thousand (or less). This project is designed to infuse new life into my classroom library for students with disabilities in my mild/moderate middle school English classroom.
Let's grab struggling readers' attention and motivation by funding this project; many of the books were hand selected by my students!
Students need more motivation than ever to put down their phones and pick up a book.
Who knows, a book or series in this wish list might just be that spark which ignites a middle school kid's lifelong love of reading!
