Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As the year has started, I had the opportunity to meet and get to know such an amazing group of kids. I co-teach in an ICT 1st-grade bilingual classroom of 25 amazing students in the Bronx.
In my class, all speak the same native language, but all come from different countries.
I have 22 English Language Learners. Fifteen of my students are from the Dominican Republic. Five are from Mexico, one from El Salvador and one from Puerto Rico. We all speak Spanish and English is our second language. I can identify with my students because English is my second language too. I spoke mostly Spanish at home and a combination of both languages at school. I want my students to be able to speak and read in both languages.
They enjoy genres such as fiction, non-fiction books, poetry, picture books and most important of all fairy tales.
My Project
I want to be able to help my ELL students develop their language skills. My students currently read on a Level A. I want to motivate my students to go beyond and read past their current level. I think that these books will be very beneficial in my classroom as they will be used during guided reading. The students will have the opportunity to borrow the leveled books and take them home. Many of my students arrived to the U.S from their native country and don't have or are waiting on a device to read books. These resources in this project will allow students to read physical books and learn to read.
