My students need books that they can read in the reading corner with a partner. They need multicultural stories because they are a diverse group.

I teach 3rd grade all subjects. My class is heterogeneously assembled. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. We are an urban, Title I school.

My students come from very diverse cultural backgrounds. Many of them live in abject poverty. They do not have books at home. The only books they have access to are in our school. These students need to be able to read books, in the reading corner with a partner, about real life situations. They need somewhere to store "their" books and the reading cart will be that somewhere.

My students need books that they can read in the reading corner with a partner. They need multicultural stories because they are a diverse group. These students love to read. Many of us take for granted that when we go home we have access to literature and books. These students treasure books and literature. They need to be able to take ownership of these books. I want this library to be theirs. They will check these book out to each other. Read them to each to other, and then discuss, in book club form, their books. The pride and ownership that they will feel...will not be able to be measured.

Think about how you would feel if you knew someone in your classroom has books available to them all the time? These students can check books out of the school library but there are so many restrictions on these books that the students don't feel that these are "their" books. This library will be theirs. They will be in charge of it and they will have ownership of it. The difference it will make in their lives will be unfathomable. Thank you in advance.
