Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have come from many different parts of the world including Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, Nepal, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and the United States. They come with tenacity, creativity, and a wide variety of experiences and gifts. At our school, 98% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and 96% of the students are students of color. The majority of my students are learning English as a second or third language. They are students with the capacity to achieve greatness.
My Project
In our room, we love to read. We walk to the local library every month and we go to our school library. We share books we are reading and discuss books with peers. We read in the mornings, afternoons, and on field trips. That said, it is always a challenge to find books that reflect the students in my class. My students are very accustomed to literature as a window to somewhere else, but we all need mirrors in the literature that we are reading. These books would provide my students that opportunity.
When students are validated in all aspects of who they are, their confidence grows.
When students are confident in themselves they can truly achieve anything. These additions to our classroom library will provide us with some of the materials necessary to engage our students with culturally relevant literature.
