Help me give my students class sets of books about reptiles, insects, and carnivorous plants along with live insects and plants to inspire interest in reading these books!
Our school, which is bursting at the seams, has a large population of English language learners. About one-third of our students are in the process of building English proficiency; we are home to students from around the world. Some of our students come to us without prior formal schooling. Others have a strong academic background in one (or two!) languages and are focused on building English vocabulary and language.
Students will explore these exciting books about reptiles, insects, and carnivorous plants while observing and caring for live plants, reptiles, and insects.
The presence of live specimens in our classroom will excite interest and bring a buzz to our reading time. Students will have their own copies of these books which they will be able to share with family at home as they talk about what we're doing in class, building that critical school-home connection in a very authentic way.
