Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students enjoy story time. I want my learners to read rich literature to make progress in reading and to develop a love for reading. The challenge is to develop oral skills in their primary language in order to advance to the next English level. The greatest gift is the passion for reading.

My students are bilingual kindergarteners who are developing oral skills in both Spanish and English.

They are English Language Learners. The population is mostly Hispanic. They are students who are eager to learn but lack the necessary language skills required to compete and be successful in the future. My school is a Title I school located in an urban city. The parents are supportive of bilingual education and the school continues to have a strong bilingual program in the primary grades. This program helps them to be successful in the English immersion classes gradually.

My Project

My students will listen to read along children literature during story time. Children will follow along to increase listening skills and comprehension. They will also read independently in their listening center during center time. I also want to incorporate retelling, sequencing and writing which will help them become confident readers and writers. For a Home-school connection I am planning to send one book a week for parents to help retell the stories and increase comprehension skills. My students will learn to read along, to appreciate children's literature and will increase reading fluency. My students need the support from these Spanish Storybook Read-Alongs to increase their knowledge, oral skills, fluency, and comprehension. They will learn to love reading.

The donations to this project will expand my Spanish Read Along Library and will help to add rich developmental appropriate children's literature for my kindergarteners.

My students will be more motivated during story time and will increase vocabulary in their primary language in order to succeed and move up to the next English level. English Language Learners need to move one level per year in order to reclassify.
