Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third and fourth grade music students have reached a milestone in their education: district-created exams in music class. In December they will all take a written test to assess their learning in music so far, and part of the exam covers musical instruments and instrument families.

The students of my urban school are multi-cultural, the majority being immigrants from Latin American countries.

They are enjoying music class a great deal this year, as we have so far been learning music theory and applying our new knowledge to a Boomwhacker curriculum. Next week we will add in lessons and activities about instruments: violin, flute, trumpet, snare drum, etc. They will also learn about how instruments are categorized, into families. Many of my kids are crossing the threshold from Learning to Read to Reading to Learn, and as you can imagine, reading across the curricula is emphasized greatly in my school. I'm hoping, with these mini-libraries about instruments, that my students will take the opportunity to strengthen their music learning while practicing their reading skills.

My Project

I work with a fantastic team of teachers at my school, and the homeroom teachers of my students who will be taking the music exam in December have graciously agreed to rotate this library of books about instruments between their classrooms for the children to read outside of music class time. My goals are to re-enforce and deepen the learning that will happen during music class, and to encourage the children to keep learning about music even when I'm not there teaching them music.

These books will stay with my school music program to be read by students for many years to come.

By having these informational sources available to the students, my classroom will improve by strengthening the lessons and learning about musical instruments. My students will have a greater chance of retaining the new information we cover in class when, throughout the week, they are able to read about the musical instruments together, converse about musical instruments, and enjoy the topic.
