My Students

Students need to be motivated to think, reason, and use their math skills to solve problems. Providing students with interesting and challenging non-fiction math literature creates opportunities for meaningful mathematical investigations.

I teach fourth grade math in a diverse, middle poverty district.

My students love math and crave challenges. However, the math skills they learn each day are often taught in isolation leaving students feeling disconnected from how math is used in everyday life. Many of my students don't have opportunities outside the classroom to make real-world math connections, so providing them with opportunities to apply their math skills in school is essential.

My Project

I am requesting a classroom order of 45 subscriptions to Scholastic's DynaMath magazine. Scholastic Math classroom magazine articles not only engage students and provide them with interesting topics to learn about, but also include extension activities which allow students to apply the skills they've learned in math class. Scholastic Math magazines also support Common Core by helping to provide a solid math foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, division, fractions, and decimals--How exciting for the teacher!

This project is important because it will provide my students with fun, interesting non-fiction math literature and give them opportunities to make meaningful connections between the isolated skills they learn in math class and the world around them.
