Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach third grade in an low-income inner-city Chicago school. My students come from very challenging homes where, unfortunately, many of their families do not provide many teaching moments for them at home. As a result, school is often the only time when they are engaged in learning. My students LOVE to read. They love to learn about the world around them and discover new things through the world of books. On the flip side of that, math tends to be more challenging for them as they are often telling me they \"don\'t get it\". In recent years, authors have done a great job at writing children\'s books that teach about math concepts. In the past year I have tried to tie more literature into my math lessons. I have seen, even months later, my students seem to remember more about the math topics when I read a book to make the material more real to them. I would love to have a collection of math books in my classroom to make math more \"real\" and fun for the kids. How exciting would it be to learn fractions through the \"Hershey Chocolate Book\" or learn probability through a book called \"Probability Pistachio\"! If you sponsor this request my children will start to love math as much as they love reading!!!
