Let's read about a hero our own age, Malala Yousafzai!
My students need a class set of biographies about Noble Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai. Her message on the importance of education is an inspiration.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my kids come to me below grade level. We work hard all year long. The majority of my students don't travel outside of the area in which they live, so let's want to bring the world to them. My dream is to help them understand that education is their path to a limitless future.
I teach in a high poverty area.
My kids don't have the resources, advantages, nor support that some children enjoy. The neighborhood is not always a safe place. School needs to be the place they can escape to. We need to create a safe haven where kids are inspired to do and be great. I want my kids to learn to be leaders; not followers.
A lot of my students spend their entire lives in their neighborhood. They don't leave our town much less our county or state. Their world view has been limited. I want to expand their knowledge of the world around them through literature.
Growing up in extreme poverty can be rough on a person's ability to dream and strive for a better future. I want my students to know that a brighter future is available to them. I want to help them develop the drive and skills needed to work on making those dreams a reality.
My Project
Our changing curriculum is focusing on non fiction books. Non fiction books are not always a favorite of young readers. I want to provide my class with high quality, inspiring choices in this genre. I believe that the biography of the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai, is a great choice to teach my kids the importance of education, equality, and perseverance.
This book will be the focus of our unit on biographies. I am excited about the prospect of my students reading about a hero not much older than they are. How often does that happen in school?
We will use this novel as a springboard to lessons in reading, writing, civics, history, and geography.
Donating to our class project will help bring the world to my students.
I truly believe the more we know about others the more we can learn about ourselves. Reading the story of Malala Yousafzai will help my students learn that, despite great obstacles, greatness is still within their reach.
