This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

This community has been greatly impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Our families have lived in tents on the property of the city's civic center, moved in with relatives, and stayed at local hotels. Prior to the storm, this was a low socioeconomic area. With the loss of housing and even some jobs, it has gotten even worse.

Through all of the setbacks, we have the best little school around.

Our students are smart and very eager to learn. They come to school daily with a willingness to become better students. There is a clear team with the parents as well. They are willing to do whatever it takes to help the students be successful.

My Project

Statistics have proven that a student learns better when they have the opportunity to physically complete the activity. Sure they could watch me construct a hovercraft, but what an amazing experience that would be if they could actually build one themselves! Last year, we did this exact project. The students glued the pop-top to the disk, blew up the balloon, and set their hovercraft off.

Through this demonstration, the students learned the difference between potential energy (before the pop-top was opened and the air from the balloon was released) and kinetic energy (when the air was released and the crafts went flying).

The student's ability to do the hands-on activity greatly improved their understanding of this concept and it was reflected on later testing.
