Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school, which sits on the edge of a coastal town in California, has a student population that largely consists of children of color and almost one-third of the students are English Language Learners. All of my students come from diverse countries, family units, and socioeconomic standings, which lead to a rich cultural environment. However, due to the high poverty rate in my county, many students are not afforded the hands-on, individualized, extracurricular education that they deserve.
My goal is to create a curriculum that is relevant, and individualized for my students.
I personally teach the upper levels of ELD which means my students are in my class for two periods a day. The longer class block allows more time to develop the students' perspective and interests through Reader's and Writer's Workshop.
My Project
The last year my classroom library consisted of a very loved, hand-me-down faux leather couch, my bean bag from when I was in middle school, two bookshelves, and a very interesting $13 rug I scooped up at a yard sale. Although a bit shabby, my biggest 8th graders still laid on the rug during SSR, squeezed in 4 kids on the couch and two kids sitting on the deflated bean bag. I can not tell you how many times I got a reluctant reader to open a book by enticing them with the reading area. I started thinking "How many kids can I get out of their desks and reading?" The money for this project will specifically go to two nice comfy bean bags and a carpet that my kid scan lounge on while reading.
This project is made to get more students out of their desks and into a true reading environment: two nice comfy bean bags and a carpet that my kids can lounge on while reading.
We as adults don't always sit at the dining room table and read - we read snuggled on the couch or propped up comfortably in bed. Why not give the same opportunity to our students?
