My Project

This year our school resurrected its wood shop program. The previous wood shop teacher had retired and the shop was being used as a regular classroom. When I moved into the shop it was in disarray. Workbenches and tools were rusted and neglected. There were only four working bench mounted vices that needed to be shared with twenty six students. Yet in spite of these speed bumps, one of my top priorities was to instill safe practices with my intermediate school students.

Bench vices and clamps provides a simple method for students to safely get a grip on their projects.

Vices and clamps securely hold workpieces which allows for precise and accurate cuts. Bench vises are used for sawing, filing, drilling, and shaping wooden pieces. They provide a stable platform for these tasks, ensuring clean and accurate results. Vices and clamps act like a third hand to hold the project while my students can keep both hands on the tool thus practicing safety.

As this year winds down I can reflect and prepare for next school year. There were four accidents in the shop. All of these were small cuts which required band aid fixes. All of the students recovered fully from their injuries. While four might seem like a small number, I'd prefer it to be zero. Having more working vices and clamps will help to keep fingers out of harms way.
