My Students

Kindergarten is so much fun! Our students learn in many different ways using all of our senses and multiple intelligences. We use a wide range of techniques to help all the students succeed no matter what their level. Our students attend a Title l school. Most of the students come from families from a low socioeconomic status, with over 70% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Brooklyn. Our school is a caring community of successful learners, which can be seen through collaborative student project-based learning in and out of the classroom. Kindergartners in our classes love to work with hands-on materials and have many different opportunities to practice a skill before it is mastered.

My Project

Through play, children explore and navigate the social, physical, emotional and cognitive worlds around them.

Benefits of purposeful play include: Social and emotional development, language development, metaphorical and abstract thinking, fine and gross motor skill development, creative thinking, and problem-solving abilities!

Purposeful play is not just any play. Besides being enjoyable, it allows children to make meaning out of their experiences in a way that is engaging and rigorous. This requires teachers to thoughtfully plan for the play experiences and to have the necessary materials to create an environment that nurtures such meaningful growth. The items requested will allow my students to be able to socialize freely and continue playing and exploring with age appropriate toys.

The materials I am requesting will help my students engage in pretend play. While playing with the toy cellphone and food, my students will practice being caring and kind and communicating in the dramatic play area. The blocks will help my students develop spatial awareness and acquire basic knowledge of geometry, physics and technology. They will be so excited to represent the world around them! Then too, they will problem solve and develop social and emotional skills needed to succeed in school and life. All children enjoy role playing, having materials for their pretend play gives them the opportunity to explore new and different roles.
