My students are the most amazing kiddos on the face of the planet! Their smiles include autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy! We use wheelchairs, walkers and have lots of extra equipment, like hearing aids and leg braces! We talk with sign language and use pictures to talk with friends! They bring so much joy to our school and all the other students! We teach our friends “you don’t have to be perfect to be amazing!” While we teach others about our needs, we keep learning new skills like walking, sharing with a friend, holding a marker, and playing with toys!
Right now, my students are not able to play on our playground with their same-aged peers. Due to their physical disabilities, they cannot climb the monkey bars, swing on a swing, or even climb the stairs to go down the slide. It’s not much fun sitting in a wheelchair and watching everyone around you play and laugh! Our other students try to include them, but it’s just not feasible without proper equipment. Providing them with smaller equipment will let them enjoy recess, too. I specifically picked out toys and pieces that their friends can still play with them and enjoy being around them!
