I teach in a Special Day Class that host unique students with special talents and abilities. These student are kindhearted and eager to learn in their own special way. They come to school with smiles on their face and hearts filled with gold.
All the students are labeled with a disability.
However, they don't allow labels to keep them from being their best selves. They enjoy learning and school happens to be most of their safe haven. They are able to find the skills they need to meet many of their goals. These kids are the future!
My student enjoy using materials like "Magna Tiles" and match cars to play with during the day. However, unbeknownst to my students these social activities has improved their language and other skills. Each one of my students receives speech services and it is during play, the speech therapist sees the most growth. We as an SDC team are able to see students' strengths and challenges during these social activities.
Including choices like Barbies, CVC word builders, and whole group coloring rolls will heighten their vocabulary, but also create a safe space for pretend play.
Creating this space will allow students to progress from parallel play to both associative and cooperative play. The more my students are able to communicate appropriately the more chances they to be successful in their academics.
The art of play will help my students with ELA, math and science. When students pretend they will be able to describe and verbalize needs. This will be useful when writing about daily topic or even when doing word problems in math. These multi-sensory toys will excite my students but, also help them meet IEP goals.
