My Students

The students impacted by this project fit every description of a high school student imaginable. These funds are going to be used to create an after-school organization that creates a safe space to welcome students of all backgrounds, personalities, and interests.

You have the opportunity to make a contribution that has the potential to impact every student at my high school.

Every student will be able to join and participate in this program, should they choose to do so. Students will socialize and engage with their classmates and peers, mastering 21st Century Skills, all while having fun.

My Project

Hello! I am an astronomy and physics teacher at a Title 1 high school. At the end of this past school year, I had a few physics-free days between exams and the end of the year to occupy and brought in a few of my favorite board games for my students to play. I was surprised at how quickly students were engaged in the games. Within just a few minutes, students were excitedly plotting and planning and scheming their own successes and their classmates' demises. Over the next few days, students came to class excited to join the next game, and every student wanted to play. I was impressed at how smoothly and seamlessly the science nerds, sports jocks, geeks, dweebs, band nerds, choir dorks, and that girl who's been quiet all year, all played together, talked to each other and made new friends.

Students played games together like a replica of the Breakfast Club, but with board games instead of mandatory detention.

Students voluntarily organized themselves into a few small and diverse groups that wanted to come after school and play more games. Soon I consistently had groups of students in my classroom after school playing games for an hour or more. They brought

in snacks and drinks and made themselves at home. I think many of them enjoyed the camaraderie, a sense of belonging, and bonding over mutual interests. It's only mildly exciting that I can tie these games and club back to my school's mission statement to prepare students with 21st Century Skills, all of which are exemplified in games: Problem-Solving, Technology, Collaboration, Oral and Written Communication, Strategic Reading and Research. Students can do all seven in the context of conquering the galaxy or saving the world from monsters.
