This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school was established in 1928, and has been serving a small community for many generations. It is my 21st year teaching, and I had an awesome experience of teaching my former student's daughter in my class a couple years ago. My current aide is also my former Kindergarten student.

My school is a Title I school, where a lot of my students qualify for the reduced price or free lunch program.

Many students come from diverse cultural backgrounds. There are 16 different languages spoken at my school. Most are English language learners, speaking English as their second language.

After teaching 17 years in Kindergarten, I am back in 2nd grade this year. I'm excited to teach students who will be able to do so much on their own; collaborating, researching and working independently to be innovators!

My Project

As a teacher, I feel that it’s important to find activities to keep my students fit and healthy. My husband was over weight for many years, and he has lost more than 70 pounds by playing this wonderful sport, badminton. He fell in love with badminton when he started playing about 2 years ago and has been playing 4 times a week. I’ve started playing badminton with him to keep myself healthy for about a year now. Many people are amazed how much weight he has lost, and they also want to play badminton too! When I saw this gym and fitness challenge from Donorschoose.org, I thought it would be an excellent idea to introduce this sport to my students as well and play this fun exercise regularly with them.

Badminton is super fun and makes you sweat in a very short amount of time.

If I get these materials funded, I would have enough for a whole class of 27 students to play badminton at the same time in groups of 4. They won't have to waste their time waiting for their turn, and the portable sets are very easy and quick to set up to start playing right away. I can set aside the time to teach this sport every day as our PE time and also have the equipment available for any students who would like to use them after school in the play ground. It’s easy enough to play for everyone in all ages. I would love to see my students fall in love with this sport too and keep them fit and active!
