This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a teacher in an impoverished area in the inner city. My sixth grade is comprised of 29 amazing students, all of whom get free breakfast and lunch. My students are curious and eager to learn. They are kind and generous to one another. They come from diverse backgrounds and most come from single-parent homes. I want them to foster a love of reading so they can become better readers and writers. Most of the children have a limited home library and few have access to the public library.
My Project
I have used this book in the past and the students really loved it. Unfortunately, over the years the books have gotten worn out and books are missing to complete a class set. I have used this book to teach students empathy and kindness. They actually tried to "Pay It Forward" to members of the class and the students really used their imagination to develop different strategies to help one another. We also had a school-wide initiative to encourage people to pay it forward. This taught the students that doing something nice for one person will encourage others to use kindness instead of negativity in their lives.
