Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a structured English immersion first grade classroom set in a very needy community. Our school follows the Response to Intervention literacy model which means that students are taught directly at their level in each classroom.
My students learn the English language and become readers in just ten months! It takes a lot of literature access and quality reading materials to help them along; our school seriously lacks supportive texts just right for their emerging reading levels. Last year I bought as many leveled readers as I could afford with my own personal money and found that the students really responded quickly and their reading confidence and performance improved greatly. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to purchase a class set.
Because our school devotes close to three hours for literacy instruction each day, visual and performing arts instruction time occasionally suffers. In addition to the sight word readers, I am requesting letter block stamps and paint supplies so the students can use earned time to create posters that display the sight words of the week while also incorporating color patterns.
Supporting this project is empowering students as readers and creative artists! Your help will make it possible for my students to receive access to a variety of texts that help review the fundamentals of reading -- sight words! By using their leveled readers, student fluency will improve as well as confidence. This project is very important to me because it will help these students believe in themselves as readers and express themselves as artists by incorporating word-learning into art!
