Help me give my students get the books I need to allow my students the opportunity to connect with this novel.

My Students

I see my students "reading" on their phones and Chromebooks.

I have students who want to learn, yet with all the technology at their fingertips, they struggle to make connections with the materials being presented.

As a child, I loved reading. I would think of the characters and couldn't wait to get back to the book to read about what would happen next. I want to help my students discover this same joy. I want to help my students explore their world.

However, when using technology they are not really reading. They do not make notes about what information the pages are giving them. They are not questioning events, characters, or plots as they read. I would like to get another class set of the novel "Orbiting Jupiter."

By checking out actual books that students can hold, turn pages and make notes using post-it notes will allow them to have a personal interaction with the novel's characters, plots, and events. I would love to get a couple of additional classroom sets (35 books each class).

My Project

I have watched as my students read from their Chromebooks or phones. They do not interact with the materials because they cannot annotate or ask questions as they read. I want my students to have a personal relationship with the novel. I want them to ask questions, comment on something they connect with and write insights they have while flipping pages of an actual book.

Why the push for actual books?

There is magic about turning pages as you read. You can easily go back to reread a passage or take notes using Post-it notes to have a connection with the story. We are losing the love of books. Online resources are fine in certain cases. But many online books have different page numbers than the actual book, so if part of the class has a book and another part of the class is using an online version, confusion occurs. It is more difficult to have a discussion.

Einstein supposedly said "I fear the day when the technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots." I want my students to have the experience of using an actual novel, one they can turn pages and annotate with Post-it notes. By touching the actual book, there is a connection you cannot have with a phone, Chromebook, or laptop. Thank you for considering my request.
