My Students
I teach in a small, urban school with a diverse population. It is composed of two hundred and sixty students in grades PreK- Grade 4. My students come from low socio-economic backgrounds, which all qualify for free school breakfast and lunch. Forty percent of the school community come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken.
My Project
In math, students have attained automaticity (also known as math fact fluency) when they can easily retrieve basic facts from their long-term memory without conscious effort or attention. In third grade, students learn to multiply. It's important that they understand the meaning of multiplication, as well as knowing their multiplication facts fluently with automaticity.
Automaticity is attained through learning, repetition, and practice.
These materials will allow students to practice independently, alongside a partner, or at a math center. This flexibility in learning increases engagement which fosters an eagerness to learn.
Please help my students with this important grade 3 math focus. The more they practice, the more easily they will learn their facts. This automaticity will help them with division and transfer directly to the skills necessary in the upper-grade levels.
