This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember your first childhood friend and how much fun you had together? Do you remember how he or she made an impact on you for possibly the rest of your life? Now imagine you have a disability, and you have limited opportunities to make friends and develop meaningful relationships.
Many of my special needs students long for friendships with children of their own age but do not have opportunities to interact with typically developing children.
Students in my classroom have varying disabilities such as autism, intellectual disabilities, orthopedic impairments, and vision and hearing impairments. Most of my students are nonverbal and cannot express their feelings. But spend one minute with any one of these special children and you will no doubt know that they do have feelings, and they love interactions with other children.
My Project
What better way to get typically developing and special needs students together than with music and dance?! Every child loves music and can participate by feeling the beat. Music and dance is the perfect combination to bring children of all abilities together.
With this project funded, we will be able to have one hour of professional dance instruction from DJ Ron Howard. He is a local music enthusiast who teaches simple yet interactive dance steps that include all children. Some dances will be with a partner, some with the whole group, but all the dances are designed to promote inclusion, no matter the children's abilities.
Funding this project will help my students engage in physical activity in a fun and interactive way.
They will also have opportunities to develop inclusive friendships with their same age peers as dance buddies. These buddies help provide positive role models and peer modeling for my students with disabilities. Dancing with DJRon will benefit not only my students but the whole school as this project promotes friendships among all children, no matter their abilities.
