As we read, students are practicing important reading skills such as identifying theme, making inferences, analyzing characters, determining the meaning of unfamiliar words, and using evidence from the text to support their thinking. They are also learning how different parts of a story can connect, especially as the mysteries and events in *Holes* begin to come together.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active experience. We read together, read independently, stop to discuss important parts of the story, and share our predictions and ideas with one another. I have especially enjoyed seeing students who don't always consider themselves \"readers\" become interested in what happens next and excited to talk about the characters. Having classroom copies means every student can follow along, reread sections, and participate in our discussions. These materials have transformed our life cycle unit into a hands-on language laboratory. My students, who are all working hard to master English, are no longer just looking at diagrams in a book; they are using high-level academic vocabulary like incubation, embryo, and hatchling while observing real life unfold. A standout moment occurred when our first chick finally pipped through its shell. The classroom fell into a respectful, breathless silence, followed by a collective cheer in multiple languages. Seeing the students use their new descriptive adjectives to record observations in their \"Chick Journals\" has been an incredible bridge between scientific inquiry and language development.\r\n\r\nThe initial reaction to the materials was pure magic. When we first unboxed the incubator and the \"parts of a chicken\" models, the students' eyes grew wide with anticipation. For many of my students, this was their first time seeing the technology behind agriculture up close. One of my first graders looked at the egg candler and whispered, \"We can see inside?\" with total wonder. That spark of curiosity is exactly what drives their desire to speak, ask questions, and share their findings with one another. Your generosity didn't just buy equipment; it provided a shared experience that gave my students the confidence to practice their new language skills in a meaningful way.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next steps involve a \"Care and Growth\" project. Now that our chicks have hatched, students are tasked with monitoring their growth and learning about the responsibilities of animal husbandry. We are currently working on a collaborative \"How-To\" guide for chick care, where students will write instructions for feeding and maintaining a healthy environment. This project will culminate in a presentation where they explain the transition from hatchling to pullet, ensuring that the vocabulary they've learned sticks with them long after the chicks move to their permanent home.
